Cardinal Health

The Challenge

Cardinal Health is a Fortune 18 company committed to improving the cost-effectiveness of health care. Cardinal Health has more than 400 locations, and employs over 30,000 people worldwide.

When Cardinal Health decided to expand their world headquarters in Dublin, OH, they needed to both update and add on to its physical security system. The existing system was unable to keep up with the monitoring of visitors, building access by employees, and responsiveness from incidents requiring video-based data.

It consisted of an eight-year old Ready Key Pro access control and employee badging system, as well as a closed-circuit television system made up of older generation digital video recorders and analog cameras. None of these elements were integrated with any of the company’s existing network infrastructure.

The Solution

After determining their needs and goals, Cardinal Health called on the expertise of Resource One to complete all of the hardware, software, and low-voltage wiring for the new security system.

The system that Resource One installed is the Lenel OnGuard Total Security Knowledge Management Solution, a network-based, IP centric system. Through this system, Cardinal Health has integrated:

  • access control
  • employee badging
  • intrusion detection
  • emergency call boxes
  • network video system
  • visitor management

All of these applications communicate together via the existing network infrastructure.

Resource One also created a new Security Operations and Intelligence Center (SOIC) for Cardinal Health, including providing and bench testing all hardware. The SOIC features a video wall solution that provides the ability to display all system information in real time through advanced technology processing. The SOIC is designed to be fully scalable, capable of accommodating future expansion and new technology.

The Result

The new system has helped Cardinal Health become more efficient, reduced the number of security staff needed and increased response time to emergencies. Forensic investigation is now quicker and more effective. In addition, the amount of service issues within the system has been significantly reduced. All system information is monitored via the state-of-the-art SOIC in the Dublin, OH headquarters.

As Cardinal Health continues to grow, the new system provides the capability to connect its 400+ remote facilities and locations into a single system and control center.
